Drying behavior of dense refractory castables. Part 2 – Drying agents and design of heating schedules

Drying is the most critical process of first heating cycle monolithic dense refractories, as reduced permeability resulting microstructure may lead to explosive spalling and mechanical damage associated with dewatering. The part this review series pointed out various drying stages, role binder components techniques that can be used follow water release in as-cast refractory materials, when they are exposed heat. Although defining a suitable schedule great challenge, some tools applied minimize risks steam pressurization. In context, second article points (i) main agents how affect castables’ (organic fibers, metallic powders, enhancing active compounds, silica-based additives chelating agents), (ii) effects related procedures commonly during designing routine (i.e., rate, ramp versus holding time), well influence castable’s dimension on overall behavior. Considering recent advances regarding design formulations their processing, one expect incorporating into prepared composition should safer such consolidated structures. Besides that, novel engineering opportunities, use in-situ based experimental neutron X-ray tomography) obtain more accurate data development numerical models, might help simulating predicting pressure developed systems heating. Consequently, instead conservative schedules empirical knowledge, optimized technical scientific information.
